last night I okayed an XP sp3 update and my computer went through the normal update process but I woke up and all it would do is restart, get to the windows splash and then restart again. I would love any and all help that I can get before I have to talk to the folks at microsoft

I am signing off for tonight.
Yes support for xp with sp2 finishes 10 June.
You need to check before you attempt SP3 that you meet these conditions
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717
If you do then go to the next - below.
Run this
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320454/en-us
It will tell you what updates you need.
If any will install - run those first before SP3, then try SP3 again. If it will still not install, download it and save it. This will negate the need for repeated attempts at downloads to temp and failure installs.
If SP3 fails on an install from the download rather than the automatic update,
Run this
http://fixitcenter.support.microsoft.com/Portal
