We're having a problem with our HP Pavilion laptop running Windows Vista where it crashes and all you see are horizontal lines on the screen. Below is a list of things we've tried to troubleshoot what the problem is, can anyone interpret from this list what the problem might be or have anything else we can try to narrow the problem down?

    - crashes on battery and AC adapter
    - updated bios, drivers, ran antivirus, downloaded windows updates, did system restore, still crashes
    - when it crashes, music freezes as well, so it's not just video card
    - didn't crash when it booted and ran from norton antivirus CD
    - rebooted and ran linux from CD, crashed on linux
    - removed/replaced battery and RAM, still crashes
    - hard disk check completed without problems

    Welcome to TSG!

Try testing the memory with memtest
    http://www.memtest.org/

It takes hours, let it do a few passes.

If it passes the test, it may be a heat issue.

It passed the memory test, how would you determine if this is a heat issue or something else?

Less than three hours between our posts, I doubt you let it run long enough.

How old is the laptop? If under warranty take it in. Linux LiveCD shouldn't crash unless there is a hardware/heat issue. I have never seen it or heard of it anyway. If it loads, it should run.

    Let memtest run overnight.

How long after starting laptop from cold does it crash?

Are you holding it on your lap?

It's not under warranty anymore, it's over a year and a half old. We will let it run overnight to see what happens. It usually takes about 10-15 minutes to crash. We are not holding it in our laps, we even tried putting it on one of those fans that cools it down and it still crashed.
