All of the sudden my PC is not recognizing my Western Digital wd5000h1cs-00 external hard drive. I have had the unit for about 2 years with no problem. I did the firmware update and I was able to see all the data again. But now I cannot get the computer to recognize it and access any of the data. I am running XP. Please help as I have all my family photos and music on this.

Do you not have the originals on your main internal hard drive that you can recover?

There are a couple of possibilities here that either the hard drive is failing or the circuitry in the enclosure has failed. In order to retrieve your data take the hard drive out of the enclosure and hook it up to the internal connections of a desktop PC, or purchase a Laptop Hard Drive Adapter (about €10) and connect it via USB to a latop. This will hopefully give you access to the drive.

You can also try this Ubuntu disc if that does not work.
Ubuntu Live CD to back up files from your dead Windows
