Can a fan become faulty even if the user didn't do anything to it? Or related to it? (e.g. by itself)

Yep.....it can just stop.....2 reasons no power getting to it or the fan is faulty......sometimes the fan gets noisy for awhile first before it just stops.

Well, it was after the computer randomly found new hardware and I rebooted, and the fan stopped. (I believe..)

If it was not long ago you could try System Restore to date before it found new hardware.

Yes it is....but we must be getting somewhere as the fan is running again.

Could the connection to the fan be loose?

I don't think so.. we (father and I) recently cleaned out the insides of the computer (darn dust bunnies!) and didn't have any problems..

Everything and cables connected firmly.....maybe something got slightly knocked, it doesn't take much.....memory cards...Video card....cables......IDE cables, if something had an intermittent connection that would explain found new hard ware message.

That I have not. But I believe it will fail. Also, I recently installed a new video card driver and I don't want to go through that very difficult process again.
