I run a 1.3 P4 with Windows ME and 128 mb RDRam, with a 40 gig HD with about 1 gig (variable) of space remaining.

I tried installing the diskeeper defrag trial program the other day and when I restarted, my computer hung up, going only as far as the desktop before Explorer would lock up. I eventually managed to start the computer in safe mode and take the defrag program off, but I am still having problems getting a smooth startup. In addition, 2 seemingly unrelated but often used programs, Winamp 5 and MSN Messenger 6.1, both now freeze up when I try to start them. Since everything went wrong when I installed/uninstalled the defrag program, I'm assuming that that is somehow the program that is messing things up. Here's my hijack log, anybody got any suggestions? Thanks!

Why don't you try first going about troubleshooting yourself. That is, use MSConfig, put it in Selective Startup (which is should be in already), and start unchecking things on the General tab.

First, start out by unchecking all the items under Selective Startup (i.e., load startup group items, autoexec.bat, config.sys, win.ini, system.ini). Reboot. Does it load up aok?

If it does, then go back into MSConfig, and check back the win.ini and system.ini. Reboot. Does it work?

Same thing...this time add back in the startup group items. All you would have to do is troubleshoot by isolating these.

BASICALLY, you may be able to fix this problem yourself. From what you posted, it doesn't seem to be anything that may be causing the problem, except maybe Norton.

I've already run MSConfig, and there's nothing running now that wasn't already in there before this aborted program installation. I've run Registry Mechanic, Tune Up Utilities, Ad-Aware, all sorts of programs to try and fix the problem and nothing is working. It seems to boot up okay but Winamp and MSN Messenger still freeze. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both of them, and no go.

Actually, you have Windows ME. Have you tried to look to see if you have any System Restores from any days previous to your installation of the defrag program?

START -> PROGRAMS -> ACCESSORIES -> SYSTEM TOOLS -> System Restore

Does WinAmp and/or MSN Msgr have a icon in your Internet Explorer toolbar (at the top)?
I'm running Mozilla Firefox now as my browser and have an extension that puts icons for both programs into the toolbar. I don't have anything similar on IE. I've tried running the programs both from the toolbar icons, directly from the start menu, and through the quicklaunch portion of the start bar.

I don't have the system tools menu available. I tried doing a search for programs with "restore" in the filename but didn't find anything useful. Thanks for all your suggestions, I appreciate your help.

The last thing I can think of is a process in which you restore the registry back to a previous one. To do this in WinME, you could try:

START -> RUN

Type: "scanreg /restore"

It should give a msg or something, then allow you to choose what registry backup copy you want. Maybe something in here is before the date when you tried the defrag program...once you select the date (and note, it may not work if the date is the oldest one), do whatever and it will reboot and, hopefully, fix the problem.

WOOHOOOOO, that did it! :D Looks like everything's back to normal...and I'll make sure I find another defrag program to use! Thanks for all your help!

Just note that with the registry restore, Windows no longer knows about the programs that you installed (Diskeeper and anything since), BUT the files for these are still on your disk.
So, from Explorer find these folders and delete them.

You've got some things in HJT that need fixing. Now that you've run restore paste a new HJT log here,so it can be checked out. :)
