Hi, Nothing bad enough in the log to worry on> found this about Fast User Switching and hanging on logoff.

"""XP Fast User Switching Might Hang System
A keyboard corruption problem can hang XP when you use the fast user-switching feature. The symptoms for this problem are: After you switch to a different user and log off you see a blank screen and the system hangs; and when you restart the system, it hangs during the shutdown process. The hotfix for this problem, a new version of win32k.sys, has been available from PSS since August 19. Cite the Microsoft article "Logging off or restarting the computer after switching users may cause Windows XP to stop responding" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=872789) as a reference. """

Here is the MS page and KB article:

    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=872789

There may be some driver or process running that is the problem, the above is just one thing this could be....

See this about SpySweeper and just the problem you may be seeing:

    http://www.pcbanter.net/showthread.php?t=654123

I can't say whether not having it start up with Windows is neccessary, I wouldnt think so, but it should be running> and it would be a nuiscance to turn it on/shut it off every time you want to log off, so I would head for Webroot support for your version of SpySweeper and see what they may say, there might be a forum you can look at too.

Ok, well its not the win32k.sys because I have the service pack 2. I do in fact have SpySweeper so I will close that and only run it when it is needed and see if that will work. Thanks for your help.

Hi, I think you may have misinterpreted this:

To install this hotfix, you must first install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).

That does not mean, if you have SP2, you can't use the Hotifx, only that SP2 is required to install the Hotfix.

Try the SpySweeper thing, it does seem more appropriate, and if it doesn't help try the Hotfix.

Ahh, ok, I thought it came with SP2. I'll see how this works for me and let you know.

Hi, I know how hard it can be to read something written in MS language and lots of technical posts....to interpret the advice easier, look at it logically....the MS article says you need SP2 installed to use the Hotfix, so if it came with SP2, they would not say that.
