Computer going into startup repair on boot

    I'm doing a degree in IT, so I am well knowledged.

    I'm trying to help a friend (over the phone so not the easiest way) of fixing his computer.

    On boot it is taking him to the windows 7 startup repair which fails with StartUpRepairOflline AutoFailover CorruptFile

    I have suggested the following, all which have failed to make a difference:

    bootrec.exe with /fixmbr /fixboot and /RebuildBcd

    Run chkdsk

    Startup repair

    System Restore - two dates tried

    The pc is about a month or so old, and I'm thinking it could be a hardware issue, hard drive?

    Two things I am going to try when I get there is a WD Diagnostics on the Hard drive, and the sfc I'm just wondering if you guys have any other suggestions to what could be causing this, or something that I may have missed?

    Running the System File Checker would be my next move and then if no joy run the hard drive diagnostics.

    If these fail then I would suggest a full re-install.

    If that fails then return the PC for repair under the warranty.

    Unless the PC has got a bad Virus infection (which can be cured by a re-install) or the owner has been tampering with the registry or running a registry clean/optimiser there is likely to be a serious hardware error. On such a new machine I would recommend returning it.

    I built the PC therefore that's why I'm really trying to narrow it down to exact what hardware it could be that has caused this. I don't think it's a virus, nor do I think the registry has been tampered with.

    Well, after running SFC and hard drive test I would suggest a RAM test:
    Download Memtest86+ from here and burn it with an ISO burner to a CD and boot the system with it in the drive. Run at least 8 passes.

    One other thought, as this is a new build, is to make sure none of the internal connections have come loose.

    Let us know the results of the tests I have suggested and we will take it from there.

    Ram test seemed ok, SFC wanted a reboot, however it won't boot so that wont run.

    On running /scanos or /rebuildbcd it says there are 0 OS's detected, so this is obviously where the issue lies. However I don't know where to proceed from this point, the DVD reconises windows 7, the built in recovery asks for the password to get into the recovery, so again that recognises it.

    Haven't been able to run the hard drive test, as I was using hirens boot cd however it doesn't seem to like the cd drivers.

    I am wondering what you did to run SFC when the PC won't boot, this is the correct method to run it from the Command Prompt: Windows 7 System File Checker

    There is a chance in this scenario that the Windows 7 partition has become de-activated.

    Try running through this (this will be tricky over the phone)

    Download Gparted from here and burn the image with an ISO burner to a CD.
    Boot the PC from the CD.

    I would advise you to make a full back up of all your important data before making any changes, just in case something goes wrong.

    Keep hitting enter during boot up to choose the default settings, you only need to enter anything when it asks for your language preference.

    It will reach a screen where it will show the contents of your hard drive.

    Right click on the OS partition. A menu will drop down. Click on "Manage Flags" and another box will open. Click on the small box next to "Boot" so that a tick appears in it then click on the Close button. Now follow the close instruction.

    Close Instructions.
    Double click on EXIT, top left hand corner of screen. After a short delay a box will appear, click on the circle next to Shutdown so a dot appears in it then click on OK. In a second or two the CD will be ejected, take it out and close the tray. There will be a loud beep from the PC.

    The Pc will now shut down.

    If it still fails to boot, boot from the Windows 7 disc and run Startup Repair, leave the PC without touching anything as the Startup Repair may repeat automatically up to three or four times before it completes.

    Thanks for the reply, it was active I have tried so many things it unreal. Even deleted the 100mb partition and recreated on the main partition making the boot create on that with still no luck. Windows repair ran until it said it couldn't do anymore. So I backed up the data and reinstalled windows 7 and all seems ok. I ran a full WD scan and mem tests all returned with no problem. Everything seemed to be in place on the hard drive as well.

    Still no idea why this happened.
