Hello, I've been having a problem for quite a while now and thought I would post it here to get some help. My machine has been freezing up frequently (multiple times per day) for many months now. There is no pattern I can detect, except that when a Symantec virus-scan is running doesn't freeze. More recently, in addition to the freezing, Internet explorer has begun to hang - within a minute, it begins to use up 100% of the CPU and stops responding. I've run Spybot, AdAware, and CWshredder regularly to no avail. I have a HP Pavilion laptop running Windows XP Professional with SP2. If you think it will be useful, I can run a Hijack This scan and post the results.
    Thanks!

Go ahead and post the hijackthis, even though it should be clean after running those programs, its better safe than sorry.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the antivirus since it seems to be the trouble. Could be it's scanning in the background so much it's overheating your laptop. You can try turning off the background scan and instead going with scheduled scan.

Hi Doug, thanks for the quick reply. I've already tried re-installing the virus program, and also disabling the real-time scan. Doesn't seem to make a difference. Here are the results of the scan:
