I have a Dell XPS One desktop..just over a year old..32bit Vista svc pack 1 operating system..4GB memory, Intel core 2 quad cupu 2.33ghz ..had the hard drive replaced several times and finally replaced the motherboard too. Has been working ok for the last two months but now it is starting to freeze constantly..for just a few seconds it will show whatever program I am on as not responding and then it unfreezes again but it has gotten to be very annoying and am now afraid it might be a sign of something worse to come. I scanned for viruses and other threats but nothing came up. Any ideas?

Please click here to download and install version 2.0.2 of the HijackThis Installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

    Do not fix anything

Your problem is most likely caused by running two antivirus programs at the same time, Kaspersky and McAfee. Never run more than one at the time or they will fight with each other, slow down your computer, create conflicts and render your computer more vulnerable. You should uninstall McAfee with the McAfee Removal Tool.

Start with the above. Then, if you're still experiencing freezes, we'll work on trimming down your bloated Startup load and running processes.

When you boot into Safe Mode the operating system only loads the bare minimum of software that is required for the operating system to work. So, you might want to suspect a hardware issue.

Has the RAM been tested? Try a Memtest. Burn the ISO image to a CD/DVD and boot from it.

You do have a massive Startup load! [IMG]

This can significantly increase your Startup time and affect overall performance.

    Please download and run Autoruns.

    Click on Options.

Put a check mark on Hide Microsoft and Windows Entries.

Hit the F5 key to refresh your page.

Only non-Microsoft applications will be showing.

Select the Logon tab and uncheck the following items:

    Windows Defender

    MediaButtons

    Dell Webcam Central

    SunJavaUpdateSched

    Kernel and Hardware Abstraction Layer

    HP Software Update

    Adobe Reader Speed Launcher

    Adobe ARM

    IAAnotif

    RtHDVCpl

    Acrobat Assistant 8.0

    MSN Toolbar

    Microsoft Default Manager

    HostManager

    QuickTime Task

    ehTray.exe

    swg

    SightSpeed

    OnlineBackupScheduler

    AOL Fast Start

    Skype

    Dell Dock.lnk

    HP Digital Imaging Monitor.lnk

    QuickBooks Update Agent.lnk

    SetPoint.lnk

Other than your antivirus, firewall and Internet connectivity service, the Startup Type on most of your non-Microsoft Services (from programs YOU have installed), can be changed from Automatic to Manual. This will reduce the amount of processes running in the background and speed up your computer.

Run Autoruns again (with a check mark on Hide Microsoft and Windows Entries).

    Select the Services tab.

Only non-Microsoft services will be showing.

    Right-click on any service.

    Click on Jump to...

You will now be at the exact registry key for that service.

In the right-hand pane, look at the DWORD Start.

The last number at the end of the entry will be either:

    (0) for Boot.

    (1) for System.

    (2) for Automatic.

    (3) for Manual.

    (4) for Disabled.

If you want to change the value, double-click on Start and change the number accordingly.

    Reboot the computer.

You can disable Windows Defender. I find it quite useless.

    How to Disable Windows Defender

You can also disable the Windows Search service. Press the Windows key + R to open a Run box. Type in services.msc

Scroll down to the Windows Search service, double-click it and disable it.

Everything Phantom says but also go into Control Panel Programs and features and uninstall everything with the word "toolbar" in it as well.

Thanks guys..I did all of the above, I will report back and let you know how it goes from here on in.
The only thing..when I restarted my computer it couldn't find a booting device..I started it in safe mode and it was ok..so then I restarted it again and it booted up fine.
