    Hello,

Over the past 2-3 days, my computer has randomly been freezing. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with what I'm doing on my computer. Once I just restarted it and left it at the login screen, and it froze, and sometimes it will run for a couple of hours before freezing. I can play videogames that require a fair amount of CPU usage and it won't trigger a freeze automatically and I haven't been able to force a freeze.

    My system specs are:
    Windows 7 Home Premium
    MB GIGABYTE GA-X48-DS5 775 X48
    Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz 3.00 GHz
    ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
    Kingston SSDNow V Series SNV425-S2BD/64GB 2.5"
OCZ GameXStream OCZ600GXSSLI 600W ATX12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply

I ran a full Malwarebyte's Antimalware scan to see if it was a virus or other malware causing issues, and it found nothing.

I also suspected that it was a heating issue. I blew out all the dust that I could from all components and ran EVEREST to check system temperatures, but everything seemed fine to me. Below is my EVEREST read-out:

    Field Value
    Sensor Properties
Sensor Type ITE IT8718F (ISA 290h)
    GPU Sensor Type Diode (ATI-Diode)
    Motherboard Name Gigabyte EX38 / EX48 / X38 / X48 Series
    Chassis Intrusion Detected Yes

    Temperatures
    Motherboard 32 °C (90 °F)
    CPU 31 °C (88 °F)
    CPU #1 / Core #1 40 °C (104 °F)
    CPU #1 / Core #2 40 °C (104 °F)
    GPU Diode (DispIO) 42 °C (108 °F)
    GPU Diode (MemIO) 46 °C (115 °F)
    GPU Diode (Shader) 44 °C (111 °F)
    KINGSTON SNV425S264GB [ TRIAL VERSION ]
    Seagate ST31000333AS [ TRIAL VERSION ]

    Cooling Fans
    CPU 896 RPM
    GPU 0%

    Voltage Values
    CPU Core 1.17 V
    +3.3 V 3.26 V
    +12 V [ TRIAL VERSION ]
    +5 V Standby 5.24 V
    VBAT Battery 3.10 V
    DIMM 1.89 V

I checked all my fans and they seem to be running just fine. The CPU fan seems like it's running a little slow, but the CPU temperature is well within acceptable ranges. The GPU fan says 0%, but I assume that it just doesn't read that, since the GPU temperature is just fine. My last idea is that it was a temperature issue, it's just that the power supply was possibly overheating. I took the side of the case off and put a large box fan to blow air into the case to try to cool it down further, and this seemed to work for a while after a few more crashes yesterday, but it crashed twice again today. I ran it for a while in Safe Mode, but couldn't recreate freezes, but I'm not convinced that means anything, since I've been able to use it for hours at a time without it crashing in normal mode since it started freezing.

If anyone has any clues to what might be the issue, I'm all ears. While I don't want to go on a wild goose chase replacing random parts with new parts in the event that they might be the issue, I'm open to most all suggestions.

    Thanks so much!

Before suspecting a hardware issue, we should rule out a software conflict.

Please click here to download and install HijackThis.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile from the Main Menu.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

    Do not fix anything

I can't see anything special in your log that could explain why your computer is freezing.

One of your programs might be causing the issue, like your antivirus, but you'd have to turn it off for an extended period of time to test this.

Perhaps you should run your computer in Safe Mode for a whole day and see if it still freezes. If it were to freeze in that mode, we'd be almost certain that a software conflict is not involved.

You could also run a Memtest to test your RAM to make sure it's not faulty.

I can't find any issues when running memtest. This morning has been particularly bad with crashes, with each one coming ~4-6 minutes after start up. I ran it in safe mode for some time, but it did not crash. I have updated every driver I can find, despite getting some errors due to the system crashing during driver installation, and it hasn't seemed to have affected anything. Any ideas?

In that case, try a Clean Boot to isolate a possible culprit among your running processes.

    Hello,

Check your Event Viewer. Go to Start | Event Viewer | Windows Logs | Application and see if you find any errors there. If so post it here.

MemTest86+ has to ran over night atleast 7 passes. Selective Startup is a good option.

    Hope this helps,
    Captain
