My computer locks up at random times. I am not sure what is causing it. It has just started occurring. I tried to restore to an earlier date and it still locks up.

It seems like a process turns on and causes it to lock up.

Below is the information about my system.

I tried to restore to an earlier date and it still locks up.
A date BEFORE the problem I presume.?

I recommend you start with a chkdsk /r OR if you are using the GUI on My Computer, right click the Hard drive, click properties, click tools and then click error checking, click check now and then click to check both boxes and proceed from there.

If you see the results NOTE especially if there are any bad sectors on the hard drive.
It is a five stage check please do NOT interrupt it.

Follow that IF there are NO bad sectors with a system file check which is Start, run, and type
sfc /scannow
It may well ask for the XP CD, you may not of course have one it being a Dell, see how far you get without please. Click retry and then if that takes you no further click ignore.

Post back please with how that went and we will proceed to check further.

You may have too many background processes running at the same time or some applications not getting along with each other.

1- Please click HERE to download HijackThis.
2- Run the program.
3- Click on the Main Menu button if not already there.
4- Select Do a system scan and save a logfile.
5- Copy and paste the scan log from Notepad into your next reply.
6- Do not "Fix" anything unless advised to do so.

I did the disk check and it did find one bad sector in stage four that it replaced. However, it locked up again.

Below is the log file of the Hijack this file

You do have a severely bloated Startup directory.

Click Start > Run > type msconfig

Click OK.

Select the Startup tab.

Uncheck the items related to the following entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SysTrayApp] %ProgramFiles%\IDT\WDM\sttray.exe

Restart the computer.

After restarting, when the small "System Configuration Utility" window appears, ignore the message. Put a check mark in that window, then click OK.

===================================================================

Uninstall Windows Search 4.0 from "Add or Remove Programs". It's a real system resource hog.

When I run the application after my run: it is empty and I cannot associate what you have listed above.

Is there any other way that I can see the whole line. I tried making the field bigger and that did not help.

What do you mean it's empty??? Are you referring to the System Configuration Utility?

Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This is another way of opening a Run box. Type in msconfig.

No in the msconfig, under start up I cannot associate the files as you have listed.

I can get to the point under msconfig as you state but I cannot be sure of the program to check.

If you drag the little vertical lines at the beginning of each column, sideways, you'll be able to expand each column and see more details. They are simple associations.

If that's still too complicated, a program like Autoruns would make it easier.

Run the program.

Select the Logon tab and uncheck the appropriate items from my post #5 above.
