Please help me!!

If I cannot fix the comp my husband will fix it and it will be worse!!

Here is the deal....

I downloaded 9 microsoft critical updates. Ever since, the thing has lost its mind.

At times I get a blue message screen on startup telling me I have an invalid driver. When I reboot, it usually works. Now, the thing will not read my cdrom, I have no sound, and the only error that I can find is this:

"The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1, did not respond within the timeout period"

It refuses to burn CD's (phillips I installed about 2 years ago), the monitor has started flickering, and the comp locks up on occassionally.
I have run adaware, norton antivirus corporate, etc with no luck.

Please help me. I am sure you need more info, I just don't know where to get it. Tell me what you need and I will gladly put it up here. Remember, I am a complete moron when it comes to problems with comps. Thanks so much!!

You can run HJT and remove these but I dont think it will fix your problem

This site http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread/t-85362.html should be able to fix it for you because they had the same problem but it will take a bit of reading.Good luck. :)

Some updates are in the Add / Remove Programs which you can remove.

At this point I'd try System File Checker.

To do this go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:
sfc /scannow

This command will initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files which it finds a problem.

If you get a message about a dll cache then you'll have to put the XP CD-ROM in. You said you can't burn but not that you can't read from the CD-ROM.

Can't promise anything but it sure sounds like you have corrupted system files.
