Hello, first of all thank you in advance for any help you might provide, to help me with my Toshiba laptop computer. The problem started about a month or so ago. The computer began at first to run a little lethargic, every so often. Now, as I wait for a website to load it seems like eternity before the entire webpage loads up.

An example of what it's doing happened tonight just before I decided to write and ask for your help. I was on www.weather.com. Historically that website has a lot to load up before the entire page is full. While it's trying to load I cannot move the sliders to the right side or on the bottom. If I look up at the address bar on top I can see the blue spinning circle spinning away. I can't do anything but watch it until the page loads.

Also, if I write a letter using Microsoft Word or make it a PDF file, when I send it to the person I've written to, it takes a good minute to send.

Thank You Very Much,

Hi tenntod,
----------------------------------------------
Download and Run Temp File Cleaner (TFC.exe)
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
You might want to Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs... including your browser!
Right click the TFC icon and choose Run as administrator.
If you have a lot of junk files to remove, it could take a while, so please be patient and let it finish.
When it's done, it will report the total size of files removed. If it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.
You can keep TFC on your desktop and run it every week or two to clean out excessive temporary files. It does usually require a restart.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run the Farbar Scan Tool
  • Download FRST64 and save to your Desktop.
  • Double click Frst64.exe to launch it.
  • FRST64 will start to run.
    • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Press the Scan button.
    • When finished scanning, 2 logs will open on your Desktop, FRST.txt and Addition.txt
    • Please post them in your next reply.
If you lose track of them, they will be saved in the same location as FRST64.exe
Feel free to use separate replies if it's more convenient.

Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Control Panel, click on Programs and Features
Click each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, choose Uninstall, and give permission to Continue:

Java 7 Update 51

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine
--------------------------------------------------------
Run A Fix With FRST
Download attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop.
NOTE. It's important that both the program FRST64.exe and Fixlist.txt be in the same location, or the fix will not work.
(Both on the Desktop is OK, or both in the same folder elsewhere)

Run FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait. DO NOT PRESS THE SCAN BUTTON.
If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally.
The tool may start automatically and complete its work after the system restart. Let the tool complete its run.
When finished, FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents in your reply.

tenntod,
--------------------------------------------------------
Run A Fix With FRST

-------------------------------------------------------------
Download MyDefrag from here and Install it : http://www.mydefrag.com/
(The download button is on the left).
After Installation, run MyDefrag in System Disk Monthly Mode on the C: drive
(Click System Disk Monthly and then check C: drive, click Run)
Wait for it. It goes through 6 Zones. The Window will be labeled Finished at the top when it is done.
Going forward, you can run it in System Disk Daily mode, but once every week or two is sufficient.
It will finish quite a bit faster in the ensuing runs.

I'm sending both fixlog and FSRT for your review. I'm not sure if you need both but I'd rather send both for now just in case you do. Thank You.

tenntod,
Your log actually looks good.

The files supporting the extensions below have been removed, but I want to ensure they are not reloaded.
(This instruction needs to be changed so often, it's hard to keep up. )
Hope it works.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Disable Chrome Plugins
Open Chrome.
click on the small icon in the upper right with the three horizontal bars
In the popdown menu, click on "Settings"
In the window that shows up, under the Chrome listing on the left, click "extensions".
click on any of these that you see and choose Remove or Disable
Conduit Chrome Plugin
Conduit Radio Plugin
Conduit Chrome Approve TB Plugin

Close Chrome. Let me know how this goes.
(Any time you see it, regard "Conduit" as a bad word.)

I would Uninstall Norton PC Checkup as unnecessary bloat.
If you are satisfied with the speed you have now, you should be good to go.

Dear askey127,

I followed your instructions to the letter. The only extension I saw was Kaspersky Protection and it was enabled. I did not see anything regarding Google Chrome.

I went to the control panel so I could delete the Norton PC Check-up per your instructions. I did not see anything regarding Norton.

I'm sorry I forgot to ask you a question. I have always used CCleaner to clean up files on my computer. Should I keep MyDefrag on my desk-top and use it rather than CCleaner? If your answer is yes, should I delete CCleaner then?

Thank you very much for all the help you have provided. The computer seems to be doing fine and loads up faster than it was when we started.

tenntod,
The choice is between TFC and CCleaner as a Temp File Cleaner.
I would choose TFC for simplicity.
If you use CCleaner, or have it do updates, you have to be careful to avoid getting a toolbar.

Use the Temp file cleaner you choose, then MyDefrag.
Mydefrag is a good idea as a defragmenter for Windows 7, no matter what.

This should remove the Norton Health Check:

---------------------------------------------------------------
Avoid Unwanted Adware
There are a couple seriously important tips about avoiding unwanted adware.
Adware purveyors are getting more devious and unethical, so you have to be more diligent.

  • Never agree to download anything, if prompted to do so while Online.
that goes for, "Your codec/browser/flash... needs to be updated to do this, blah, blah.."
or "you need to first download the xyz.. program to do what you want".
It's OK to download updates if prompted by legitimate suppliers, when the machine boots, while not yet online.

  • Don't download anything from sites known for adware bundling.
For any online downloads, best avoid using CNET, Download.com, BrotherSoft, or Softonic
They package their own "downloaders" and, without notice, deliver serious adware in addition to the desired programs.
Unfortunately, the results may be disastrous for your machine.

FileHippo and MajorGeeks have been better, so far, as sources for downloading software.
The website of any program's original author is best of all.

  • Avoid Using P2P file sharing programs
This includes µTorrent, Bearshare, Bittorrent, Azureus, Frostwire, Vuze, Shareaza, Bitlord.
The Unethical have "planted" thousands upon thousands of infections and Adware items in the shared torrent files.

You should be good to go.
let me know.

Dear askey127,

I hope what you requested me to do has been done correctly. I say that because the last correspondence from you told me to download the fixlist. Well, it said that attachment had been blocked. However, it downloaded just fine so I ran it, and posted the log below as per your request.

Just as I thought everything was running normal tonight after the FRST64 ran and posted the log it rebooted. That reboot was much slower than normal. The home page took about 15 seconds to boot up, where it normally boots up as fast as the eye can see. Maybe you'll see something in this log.
