I have a an older model Dell 8100 series computer. The physical memory is 256mb but only 58.95 mb is available. I suspect that I have too many programs starting up and running. Before I retired I had access to a computer support office in my company to fix stuff like this so I never learned how to do it myself.
    How do I:
    1. Determine programs that are running?
    2. Set unneeded ones aside so that they don't eat up memory but are accessible when I want them?
    3. Any tips on maximizing available memory?

    I think it's clean..hikackthis log follows incase I didn't recognize a problem.

You can turn off a couple of things with Msconfig:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Here's a link on how to turn off GoogleToolbarNotifier: http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2006/07/google-is-your-default-search.html

You have three real-time anti-spyware programs running and you only need one. I would uninstall Windows Defender and SpywareGuard, but keep AVG Anti-Spyware.

Try that and see there's an improvement. If it's still running slow, I would then unistall Norton and get AVG Free Anti-Virus. Although 256 MB is on the low side, you should be able to get by.

Here is a link to crucial about upgrading memory for your PC although you can almost deffinatly find it cheaper elsewhere

    http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Dimension+8100+Series

You might want to up your pageing file size. This can be found in:
Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Advanced > Virtual Memory.

While you are there you can also chance some visual effect settings in order to free up RAM and make your PC run faster.

512MB would be fine, especially when RDRAM is involved.

And if you want to eliminate a few start up entries get StartupCp a much more elegant approach as MSConfig is fine when used as a diagnostic but is not meant to be used as a permanent solution.

It looks good, you got things trimmed down a bit. Is your system actually running slow? Did you see some improvement?

Edit: Oh that's the title of the thread. Open up task manager and look at the CPU column, see if anything other than System Idle Process is above zero.

Really can't tell much difference. It's slow. I got the 40.8 figure from System Info at Accessories/System Tools.

The 40.8 MB free memory is actually OK, is anything using a lot of CPU in task manager?

Well about the only other thing I can suggest is to uninstall Norton which is a resource hog and get AVG Free Anti-Virus and free Zone Alarm firewall.

Download both installation programs, disconnect from the internet, uninstall Norton, install AVG and ZoneAlarm. Get that set up and working before you connect to the internet again.
