It seems the problem is more complicated than just
updating drivers. According to Dell my computer was
shipped with windows 98 and is optimally configured
to run in the ACP mode and their driver devices are
set to run in that mode. Well here we are in 2003
and I have XP and I am running in the other mode
with is ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power
Interface). Is there any solution? There are actually
no BIOS revisions for my computer for XP. Having
said all that XP works fine except for the shutdowns.
Any input at all would be much appreciated.

Fragmented a thread is not a good idea and may result in your getting redundant replies, not to mention wasting the time of people trying to help--because they don't have the benefit of what has already been suggested.

I agree but the only issue now is about the 2 different
modes and how they work. I know that is complicated
stuff but that's why I am here
