For experimenting, I have an older gateway essential (pentium 3) computer that shuts down randomly. Sometimes within seconds of startup and other times a few minutes thereafter. Once its going, seldom thereafter. It usually does it within 30 seconds.

When it shuts down the green power light stays lit (I think this may be the clue) and it will not restart unless I unplug the system, wait for the power light to go off and then plug it back in. Sometimes it takes several attempts to get it going.

Please Advise.

As an aside I'd like to add this here for others that have had similar problems due to overheating. My Compaq computer started shutting down randomly, but on that there was a led in front that would blink red indicating this (I looked it up in trouble shooting). So, I opened the case and the cpu fan was not working. I got a new fan, put it in, and that was not working either. As a work arround and not replace the motherboard, to fix this, I got one of the Y adapters that plugs into the power supply cables and connected the fan to that (12 volts for me) using only the two power leads on the fan (for my fan, red and black) and leave the third disconnected. I had to cut the wires and splice them. Testing showed that the old fan would also work the same way and I did not need to get a new one after all.
