I've looked over my girlfriend's computer and can't seem to find out what is slowing it down. The only thing I think would make it slow is her weatherbug application, but I set it to only pop up the temperature and not the whole program - that has seemed to speed it up a little bit. But it still is slow when opening up applications, and just in general, seems a little slow. I can't figure out what else would be doing this. I have scanned with Norton Antivirus, Adaware, and Spybot S&D. Her computer is a compaq presario v2000 and has windows xp. Here is the HiJackThis Log:

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ (W2K/XP Only)
    · Install Ewido.
    · During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
    · Launch Ewido.
    · It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen.
    · On the left side of the main screen click update.
    · Click on Start and let it update.
    · DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:
(Start tapping F8 at the first black screen after power up)

    Run Ewido:
    · Click on scanner.
    · Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    · During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK.
    · When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
    · Save the report to your C: Drive
This will take some time to run!!!
    Boot to normal mode
Post that log and a new HiJack This log.

Looks like they're already running Ewido from the HJT log.

    Try defragmenting the drives.
Cleaning out temporary and junk files ("CrapCleaner" or other similar programs can help).

Hit CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up the task manager and see what's using the most CPU time when it's running slow.

You could make immediate performance gains from not using the Norton / Symantec software and running NOD32 or Kaspersky A.V. in conjunction with a firewall like ZoneAlarm / Jetico / Outpost instead, plus you'd get better protection.
Just look at the amount of Norton crap in the log!
    Speaks for itself really.

    FYI

some people consider Weatherbug as adware and suggest removing it.

there are plenty of other weather sites to use so should not miss it.

when running the spyware i assume you updated first

Trim down the startup list of some of its unnecessary running programs. That should speed things up a little.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - "Startup" tab. Remove the checkmark from:

    UpdateManager sgtray.exe

    SunJavaUpdateSched jusched.exe

    IgfxTray igfxtray.exe

    HotKeysCmds hkcmd.exe

    iTunesHelper iTunesHelper.exe

    QuickTime Task qttask.exe

    Adobe Reader Speed Launch reader_sl.exe

Click Apply - OK afterwards, then reboot. When the SCU window appears during reboot, place a checkmark in its lower left corner and then click OK.

    Flavallee,

you really are great on helping with the start ups. i should ask you myself for my computers. so dont take offense at the question please!

is there any point in removing the qtask from start up? Does it not come back the next time you use quicktime? i thought i saw that in a discussion somewhere a while back and it was mentioned that it was a pesky thing that always came back on the next reboot after using quick time

again please dont take offense at the question and i apologize for interjecting here

    Here's a question:

I'm not one for doing things in the registry, but why wouldn't I just get rid of:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Wouldn't that, plus marking in the quicktime preferences to turn off the system tray icon allevate the problem? Has anyone tried doing both?

Ran Ewido and am about to defrag to see if that will help.

I recently went into quicktime's preferences and shut off the icon in the system tray on my laptop and it has not come back anytime I have turned it on.

However I have not checked the registry to see if it is running - now that I am thinking of it, I have done it on this laptop that I'm trying to speed up and it did not show in the tray, but is running in the registry.

So maybe just erasing it off the registry after clicking off it being in the system tray would work - unless that just get's rid of the icon and not it actually running....

This may be way off track. I didn't see anything about iTunes or any other kind of music saved on the PC, but I know from experience that tons of music stored in any music program can cause problems. As far as Weathebug, I have experienced weird problems with that little bugger (pun intended). I decided to activate the Weatherbug program for no apparent reason. Later in the evening when I decided to check my email, and it would not work at all. My wife and daughter checked their email, and theirs worked. I said to myself, "What did I do different today that may have caused this problem?" I remembered that I activated Weatherbug. I shut off Weatherbug, and guess what - my email started working again. I deleted that little monster from add/remove. My email worked again. From there, I contacted HP and informed them of the conflict issue with a program they added to their purchase package. They were happy to be informed, but since capitolism is king, I doubt that anything was done about it.

With older versions of QuickTime, the qttask.exe problem was solved by deleting that file entirely, but the newer versions won't allow you to do that. Whenever I use QuickTime and it rechecks itself in the startup list, I just uncheck it again. Personally, I've never deleted its entry from the HijackThis log.

Check items 4 and 6 in this list particularly -- answer the rest if necessary.

1 > is it very slow to boot up?
2 > do programs open slowly?
3 > does the same behavior occur both offline and on?
4 > does it matter how long the system has been on, and does a restart improve things?

Slow performance issues can often be due to overheating, so if the system is faster after it has been shutdown for a while and then restarted -- that would be especially suspect. To check for possible problems here, shutdown, open the case and blow out any accumulated dust. Then turn it
on and check to see that the fan is working. Sometimes it helps to physically clean the fan. Programs are available that can help monitor temperatures as well.

5 > if you do a ctrl-alt-del, do any processes show excess cpu usage, other than System Idle Process?

6 > If you open the Device Manager (windows+pause/break > Hardware > Device Manager) and select the entry for IDE ATA/Atapi and select the Primary IDE > Advanced Settings, does it say the "current transfer mode" is DMA or PIO?

If it says PIO, first ensure "Use DMA if Available” is selected, then select the driver tab and uninstall the driver and reboot. Then check again.

    COMMIT CHARGE

Do ctrl-alt-del to open up the task manager. Select the "performance" tab. Let me know what you see under:

    Physical Memory

Total: this is your total installed ram -- "physical" memory
Available: this is the amt of real "physical" memory presently uncommitted

    Commit Charge

Total: this is the combination of total physical and virtual memory currently in use
Limit: this is the total physical and virtual memory available
Peak: this is the most you have had in use in this session

Michael, I'm the head of customer support at WeatherBug and while I haven't had other users report this type of isse, I'd be happy to try to determine what caused the conflict.

Feel free to email me directly at [email protected] or you can fill our a support form at www.weatherbug.com/help and just mention that you're replying to my post on the TechGuy forums and I'll take a look.
