Over the past couple of days my computer has just been shutting down randomly. I feel like it might be because its overheating but my dad says its not. Could something be wrong with the fan in the computer?

If it's a tower PC in lieu of laptop, remove the side cover and turn unit on and be sure all fans are working (particularly the one on the CPU). Also, check to be sure the CPU heatsink isn't full of dust bunnies. Use canned compressed air to blow out any dust accumulations on the CPU and on the video card cooling fan (if that applies). Your dad may be correct, but it sure sounds like an overheating problem. I absolutely do not recommend using a vacuum cleaner to do any cleaning inside the case.

Also, be sure (don't try to remove or lift any levers) but be sure the heatsink is well seated on the CPU and the levers are in locked position - I had a CPU HS clamp bracket crack on a motherboard which caused the HS to have light contact on CPU and would shut down from overheating.

Some specs on your machine might be helpful or any error messages you might be getting.

    Good luck.
