When I start up the computer, or restart, when it goes to start windows, it fails and goes to the black screen that says windows could not start, start in safe mode etc, or just start normally. When I select start normally, it starts just fine, except that my volume icon is not showing on the toolbar. I've been having issues with a new DVD drive I installed, a Sony DRU-710A, that I haven't really been able to get help with, so I don't know if that's part of the problem right now. I'm running XP Pro, and it's a HP Pavillion desktop, about 2 years old now. I've got two hard drives, the larger set as the master and the smaller set as the slaves. When I couldn't get the new DVD drive to work (it only works part of the time, see post http://forums.techguy.org/showthread.php?p=2333521#post2333521).

I also installed my old CD rom drive from a previous system to make sure it wasn't just my computer. Those two drives are set up with the old drive being the master and the new drive being the slave. In BIOS, neither of those two drives show up.

I don't know if it's a drive problem, a video/audio card non-compatible problem, or what. I've got until the 24th to return the DVD rom drive, but I don't want to do that if it's just b/c something isn't "wired" properly.

Anyone have any ideas? My next step is to just take the thing to Best Buy and have them handle it, but I'd like to avoid that if possible.

Thanks,

Heather

Have tried two different cables, no difference. I'll just take the computer somewhere and have it fixed.

Thanks anyway.

the eide cable has a red line down one side this goes into the drive alongside the power plug
if it is correct then recheck the jumpers on both drives
if they are correct
check the device manager for any yellow marks alongside your port entries or anywhere else
