What's the Operating System, Windows 98?

Meanwhile, open the computer's console. Check for lose cables such as Ribbon and power cables. Refresh their contact by removing the cables and reconnecting them. See if that makes a difference.

Also explain if at startup the BIOS logo is displayed. What happens afterwards?

You will need a Windows 98 Startup Diskette. You can download one at www.bootdisk.com.

Insert the startup diskette and start the computer. At the Menu select Command prompt without CD support.

At the Prompt type the following and press Enter:

    Sys C:

After the system files have been transfered, remove the diskette and start the computer.

If you receive an error as "Invalid Disk drive", let me know.

If the above does not resolve the issue, restart the computer and tap on F1 during startup. Once in the BIOS Setup utility, Set Defaults (F5) and exit saving the changes.

If still this wont work, start the computer and tap on F1 during startup. Scout around the BIOS Setup utility. See if the Hard drive is being detected and that the Boot order is set to A: (Floppy) First, CD_ROM (Second), IDE_0 (Hard drive) Last.

    Let me know your findings.

I went to the BIOS Utility. It said my IDE hard drive... none. I couldn't find anything about the cr-rom or the floppy disk. It probably was there but i do not know much about computers this is my first one.My computers says BOOT DISK FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK PRESS ENTER.I will try and download a boot disk for WIN98SE at the site you told me to go bootdisk.com.

If the hard drive is not recognized by the computer may be due to bad Data cables, power suply and others. So you will need to narrowdown the possible causes. In your position I would check this issue in the following order:

    1. Replace the IDE Ribbon cables.
    2. Check the Power Supply Unit (This has to be done y a tech as Tools are needed to do this.
    3. Test the Computer with a known working hard drive.

I wont spend on a hard drive prior to testing all of the above. If the computer still show problems after doing all these, then I would say its the Main board. You have to test all possibilities prior to make a final determination.

The boot disk wont recognize the hard drive if this is not being recognized in the BIOS.

Your main issue is that the hard drive is not being recognized. This is due to bad Data (Ribbon) Cables, or a hard drive failure. Another possibility could be the Power Supply Unit (PSU) malfuctioning. It does not matter what you do, as long as the Hard drive is not recognized, every effort will fail.
