    Hi all,

I am running XP home edition SP2, Dell Dimension, Celeron 2.53GHz, 256MB ram.

The problems I am experiencing are as follows:

It takes about 7minutes for the computer to boot up and be ready to use, also it has become very slow when doing things (opening programs etc).

When I try to open "my computer" to get to the folder that has all the documents in, 9/10 times it will crash (the folder will become non-responsive, then everything will go off leaving just the desktop background, I then have to wait for everything to come back on again)

I do have quote a lot of programs on my computer (which i need to go through and delete those that arn't being used) but i'm thinking there has to be something elese that is causing this.

If anyone can help i'd be very gratefull, any questions please ask and I will answer them as best as I can.

I have run a HIJACK THIS log, which is as follows:

you probably have a lot of programs that are loading on startup which can be controlled thru msconfig/startup.

the more items checked, the slower the machine.

i just have symantec av loading and get to the desktop in 45 secs with a selective startup.

how long since you've done disk cleanup, i check all boxes and after, defrag. defragging if any of the 3 show more than 10% fragmentation.

    Hi,

I ran disk cleanup (and an optimizer program) a couple days ago. haven't fully run defrag for abouy 2months tho.

I have checked msconfig/startup and have found a number of items. I have unchecked some that I know don't need to run on startup, but there are others that i'm unsure about (and I don't want to uncheck them if i need them to run) do you know if i'm gonna need any of the following:

    Smax4pnp
    Analogue devices/core

    Jusched
    Java

    Isuspm
    Installshield/update service

    Issch
    Installshield/update service

    Opware32
    Scansoft/omnipageSE

    Igfxtray
    System32

    Hkcmd
    System32

    Igfxpers
    System32

    Msascui
    Windows defender

    Dsagnt
    Dell support

    Adobe gamma loader

    Microsoft office

keep issh and adobe checked, reboot, restart, writing down the ones you uncheck.

i personally stay away from optimizer, reg cleaners and most other utilities because they can aggravate the problem.
i use the stuff within xp/2k.

i use spybot 1.4, xoftspy and symantec av.
