I got my computer about a year ago from my mom's friend, so it's a used laptop with many things already on it that i do not understand.
But recently my computer is taking longer and longer to start up each time i boot it. Now it takes about 10-15 minutes to start up.
I tried running check Disk, i tried to defrag my drives, and i tried deleting every application and software i didn't need. But still i can't get the computer t start up quicker.
I don't know if it will help but ill post my system specs, and maybe someone will have some idea of what is wrong with my computer.

OS name- Windows XP Home Edition
    Version- 5.1.2600 service pack 3 build 2600
    system model- HP Pavillion dv2000
    System type- X86-based PC
    Processor- x86 family 6 model 14 stepping 8 GenuineIntel~1596 Mhz
    BIOS version- phoneix F.0B. 7/3/2006
    SMBIOS version- 2.4
    Total physical memory- 1,024 MB
    Available physical memory- 235.79 MB
    Total virtual memory- 2.GB
    Available virtual memory- 1.95 GB
Graphics chip- Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset family
    Total graphics memory-128.0 MB
    RAM/Memory-1014 MB

I know this is probably more information than needed but if it can help, then why not.
    I hope someone can help.

First thing I do when pc slows is to do scans just in case it's a nasty:

    Malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/

    Online av scan Housecall http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/

Also you may have too many applications/progs running on startup. You really only need a few like your av and firewall.

Type msconfig into RUN and uncheck all startups you don't need then reboot.

Well i have Malwarebytes and i scan once a week,
and i have Norton 360 Antivirus, which scans everyday.
But it never makes my computer start up any faster.
And i looked through my startup applications a while back and it helped a little, but it still takes forever to start.

If you got that HP Pavilion dv2000 about a year ago, I'm assuming you got it with all the programs and "debris" that your mom's friend had in it.

Formatting the hard drive and doing a clean install of Windows XP and starting out with a pristine clean computer would've been the best option, but most people don't do that because they don't know how or don't have the install CD or don't have the patience and time.

What we need to see is what's auto-loading and running in the background and what's currently installed in it and if there's any obvious infection.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Go here and click the green icon to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4.

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in less than 30 seconds, a log file will appear.

    Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

    Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

    It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

Ok the first one is the log from the first part, i wasn't sure if you wanted me to copy and paste the entire list onto the body of the post, or put the file as an attachment, so if you need me to copy and paste it, i can.
The second is the uninstall list you asked for.
I hope im doing everything right!

The logs need to be copied-and-pasted so they can readily be viewed. I'm doing it for you this time.

Once I've reviewed them, I'll reply to you in a separate message.

Do the following in the order listed.

It's going to take you awhile, so be patient.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

    Uninstall these programs:

    Apple Software Update

    BitTorrent

    Google Toolbar For Internet Explorer
    - unless you're actually using it

    HP Help And Support

    HP Update

    iPod For Windows 2005-09-23

    kuler

    Macromedia Flash Player 8

    McAfee Security Scan Plus

    Norton 360

    Search Settings 1.2.3

    Yahoo Messenger
    - unless you're actually using it

Yahoo Toolbar - unless you're actually using it

If you're prompted to restart the computer to complete the uninstall of any of them, do so.

If HP displays a warning about certain programs not working if you uninstall its programs, ignore the warning.

If the Security Center displays a warning about your computer being unprotected, ignore the warning.

After you're done with all of the above, restart the computer again.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

    Download and save these programs:

    Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.24

    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.50.1.1100

    Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0.657.0

    SUPERAntiSpyware 4.49.0.1000

(Click the green icon link at each site)

McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool 3.5.109.1

    Norton Removal Tool 2011.0.5.13

(Click the [email protected] link at each site)

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Double-click the McAfee removal tool to run it.

Allow it to remove everything that's associated with McAfee.

Restart the computer when prompted to.

Double-click the Norton removal tool to run it.

Allow it to remove everything that's associated with Symantec, Norton, and LiveUpdate.

Restart the computer when prompted to.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Install Microsoft Security Essentials, then restart the computer.

Install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then restart the computer.

Install SUPERAntiSpyware, then restart the computer.

Allow them to update their definition files when prompted to.

Install Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.24, then restart the computer.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

After A-L-L of the above has been done, start HiJackThis and click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

Save the new log that appears, then copy-and-paste it here.

Well i don't mind removing most of this, but there are a few things i don't want to remove.
Norton-because i actually paid for it, and i'm not willing to delete something i paid around 90 bucks for.
Bittorrent-because my boyfriend uses it alot.
(and i do use my yahoo toolbar, but not messenger anymore)

And i thought HP update and help and support were important?
I thought it would update my computer whenever there is an update?
Or does it not do that. Should i have been manually downloading my updates!?
Because i honestly haven't since i reinstalled IE.

Other than that, ill start deleting all those things now.

Since you want to keep that bloated and system-hungry Norton 360 suite, disregard downloading and running the Norton Removal Tool and disregard downloading and installing Microsoft Security Essentials.

If your boyfriend is using BitTorrent on a regular basis to download "who knows what and from where", you definitely want to download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware. After you update their definition files, run a quick scan with them. Once the scans are finished, select and remove everything they find. Doing that about once a week or so will keep malware and spyware and other "nasties" in check.

If you do use the Yahoo Toolbar, that's fine. If you don't use Yahoo Messenger, definitely uninstall it.

HP Update and HP Help And Support aren't needed, but if you want to keep them, that's fine. If you advise me what the model name and model number of your HP computer is, and what the product number on its sticker is, I'll obtain the support and software update link for it.

I have no way of knowing what YOU installed in that computer since you got it a year ago, so forgive me if I make suggestions or assumptions that you don't agree with.

I would delete it if i didn't spend money on it. But ill choose another virus protection software when my subscription expires.
I actually have MalewareBytes, and recently installed SuperAntiSpyware, so im all good on that.
Can you tell me how to update the definition profiles, because i never have done that before, so i dont know how.
I'm deleting Yahoo messenger now, actually, but i think ill delete the yahoo toolbar because i dont think i seriously need it, and its not really that important anyway.

Ok ill try to get this right with the system info you need.
The sticker says i have a "HP Pavillion dv2035us entertainment Notebook PC
And by product number, do you mean the product key? (located on the bottom of the laptop)
There are a few other numbers ill try to explain so you don't have to reply with where the code is (Hopefully, one of these is the right one)
on the sticker under the laptop (where the product Key is) there are three other number sets:
    00043-728-104-501
    375052-001
    X11-45374

And its ok, i know you don't know what i installed and what he installed.
    Its no problem.

Also, When i was about to uninstall ipod for windows 2005-9-23 it told me that the last time i used it was 9-14-2010 which was when i had the laptop. If i delete this, it wont mess up my itunes, or my itouch?
I just want to make sure before i delete it. And i didnt find "Kuler" on my add or remove programs list.

Lastly, would it be possible for me to post the programs on my add and remove programs list that i dont know/understand and for sure dont use. That way maybe you can tell me whats necessary and will mess up my computer if i delete it, and whats not so i can clear up some of the pointless things on my computer. Because i tried deleting many of the software on my compter but im scared to delete some things because they may mess up my computer if i do.

Here are complete instructions for using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware that you can print off and save.

(Note: Since I'm helping you with that computer, I really would like to see the scan log results)

    Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Click "Updates(tab) - Check for Updates".

When the definition files have updated, click "OK".

Click "Scanner(tab) - Perform quick scan - Scan".

If infections are found during the scan, the number of infections will be highlighted in red.

When the scan is finished, click "Show Results".

Make sure that everything is selected, then click "Remove Selected".

If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, click "Yes".

    Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.

    Click "Logs"(tab).

Highlight the scan log entry, then click "Open".

When the scan log appears in Notepad, copy-and-paste it here.

    Start SUPERAntiSpyware.

    Click "Check for Updates".

When the definition files have updated, click "Close".

Click "Scan your Computer - Perform Quick Scan - Next".

If infections or problems are found during the scan, a list will appear.

When the scan is finished and the scan summary window appears, click "OK".

Make sure that everything in the list is selected, then click "Next".

If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, click "Yes".

    Start SUPERAntiSpyware again.

    Click "Preferences - Statistics/Logs"(tab).

Highlight the scan log entry, then click "View Log".

When the scan log appears in Notepad, copy-and-paste it here.

    ------------------------------------------------------

I personally don't install and use any toolbars in my computers.

Besides the fact that take up vertical viewing space, they consume system resources, some of them contain spyware, and some of them are problematic.

    ------------------------------------------------------

Here is the HP support and software site for the HP Pavilion dv2035us laptop.

If you add and save it in your browser favorites/bookmarks list, you can readily refer to it when you need to.

Is the product number on the sticker EZ725UA#ABA, or is it a different number?

    ------------------------------------------------------

Click "Edit" in your last reply, then remove the 25-digit serial number for Windows XP that you submitted.

If you leave it there, someone will see it and use it illegally.

I also alerted the Administrators/Moderators to make sure it's removed.

Ill post the logs as soon as the scans are finished. I don't want to miss anything. And thank you for the instructions. (though i dont know if the SUPERantiSpyware will find anything because i scanned yesterday and found around 1000 tracking cookies. I could post that log if this one wont have any infections.)

I honestly just love my bookmarks bar. Its the only one i use every time i get online!

And wow thanks for telling me about the serial number! I didn't know people could use it, but i removed it.

And yea, that is the number on the other sticker.. I posted the numbers from the wrong sticker.
There is like 6 different stickers on this laptop!

Also, so you want the new HijackThis log before or after the malware and spyware scans?
