I have had an AMD 500 computer for about four months. It has become a daily occurrence for the computer to shut itself off. I have tried the simple things like trying it in different outlets, making sure that the energy saver feature is not active, and removing the windows advanced power management. Nothing changed. The only other sympton that I've noticed is that it would make a terrible groaning, grating sound occasionally (sounded like a dying fan). The main cooling fan will work while the computer is on.

That nasty sound can be 1 of 3 things.

    1) power supply fan

    2) CPU fan

    3) Hard drive

If any of them start to die, the computer may shut itself off to stop further damage. You really need to pin down where the sound is coming from, maybe by taking the case off.
