I have a Dell XPS 400 with Windows XP and when I turn the computer on, it turns on but only goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor. If I turn the power strip off and wait a few seconds then turn it on and turn the computer on, it boots. Help!! What could be wrong with it?

Replace the BIOS backup battery to eliminate one easy thing. You might get lucky and need nothing else.

Also be sure you have no CD's in the drive bay.

I just replaced the battery a little over a month ago.

In that case, the next step would be to unplug all peripherals (usb drives, scanner, camera, printer, etc.) to eliminate them from the equation.

Then if the problem persists, unplug the CD-Rom drive and any hard drives except the primary system drive. Try booting without them.

If still no joy, go to the HD manufacturers web site and get the diagnostic software for your hard drive.

Back up any valued data before doing any extensive drive testing.
