I have a LaCie Porsche Design P9223 Slim External 500GB USB3Hard Drive that my father was using on his computer (with no problem). We're both running Windows 7. My computer, a Dell Studio XPS9000, won't recognize it in "My Computer". There's no drive letter!

It shows up in Device Manager ( says, "this device is working properly")
Show up in USB Safely Remove
Shows up in Devices and Printers
Shows up in Disk Management as Unknown/Unitialized, Disk 10. (When I right click and try to initialize it, it says "Device is not ready".)
The Driver is up to date
It works when I attach it to my husband's laptop, running Windows XP.

What can I do to assign it a drive letter???

It sounds like its failing to map the drive correctly. Try the following -

1) Open Administrative Tools (it can be searched from the start menu)
2) Open Computer Management
3) Select Disk Management
4) Right click on the device in the Volume list - Select Change Drive Letter and Paths...
5) Select add (if no drive letter exists) or change and select the Assign the following drive letter radio button. (if you can only select change, change the letter as it may be trying to use an existing drive letter)
6) Select the drive letter you would like from the drop down menu.

After mapping/changing the drive letter, see if the device shows up.

It may be that your computer does not supply enough power through the USB port.

That's it, Eyoung!!! Thank you so much! It's now happily humming along as Drive J!
