My problem is very much the same as the thread confused help here: http://forums.techguy.org/security/338800-confused-help.html
The problem is exactly as it was described on March the 8 th of last year. see here: "I am operating with windows xp. I think i got a virus by checking an away message through aol instant messaging. Now, i cant run Nortan anti-virus and a warning box pops up periodically that reads: "Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly.""
I tried all the adware blocks/detections suggested there. Nothig worked though... Maybe I'm not seing something imy hijack this log file is saying. I can just cut and paste what I received now:
    "Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

    Welcome to TSG :)

Click here to download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite:
    http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

    · Install Ewido.
    · During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
    · Launch ewido.
    · It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen.
    · On the left side of the main screen click update.
    · Click on Start and let it update.
    · DO NOT run a scan yet.

Restart your computer into Safe Mode now.
(Start tapping the F8 key at Startup, before the Windows logo screen).
Perform the following steps in Safe Mode:

    * Run Ewido:
    Click on scanner
Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK.
When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
Save the report to your desktop.

    Reboot.

Post a new Hijack This log and the results of the Ewido scan.

Uninstall eAcceleration Software from Add/Remove Programs. It's a rogue program.

    Run ActiveScan online virus scan:
    http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it.
Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you can delete it yourself.
Save the results from the scan and post them here please.

Error on downloading ActiveScanAn error has occurred downloading Panda ActiveScan. Please repeat the process. If the error occurs again, restart your system and try againPossible causes of this error are:

Not allowing the application's ActiveX control to be downloaded.

    Problems with the Internet connection.

The error could be due to a download error or an installation error due to lack of hard disk space, privileges etc.,..."

Make sure your ActiveX settings are set like this -

Go to Internet Options - Security - Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
    Now press "Custom Level."

In the ActiveX section, set the first two options "Download Signed and Unsigned ActiveX controls" to 'Prompt', and "Initialize and Script ActiveX Controls not marked as Safe" to 'Disable'.

    Try this one -

Run Kaspersky online virus scan here: http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

When given the option, choose the "Extended database" for the scan.
When it's finished, save the results from the scan and post them here.

Here are the results of th kapersky scan:"
    The scan is complete.
No malware has been detected. The sections that have been scanned are CLEAN.

    Report is empty.
Please note: The free Kaspersky On-line Scanner does not provide comprehensive protection and cannot prevent future infections. It only detects malware that has already penetrated your storage devices. We strongly recommend that you use a fully-functional antivirus solution to protect your computer at all times. "
Also today I tried to get all windows updates available.
They all downloaded and installed perfectly except this:
Security Update for Windows XP (KB913446)
This is the only thing I can think of that may be doing something connected with that proble. I mean, the fact that something prevents it from downloading and installing.

Note: When you said:"Uninstall eAcceleration Software from Add/Remove Programs", in the add/remove eAcceleration Software was nowhere to find there and neither was C:\Program Files\Acceleration Software in my Windows explorer - I think Spybot Search and Destroy removed it this morning but the settings still remain...

Click Start – Run - and type in:

    services.msc

    Click OK.

In the services window find: Windows Update Service

Right click and choose Properties. On the General tab under Service Status click the Stop button to stop the service. Beside Startup Type in the dropdown menu select Disabled. Click Apply then OK. Exit the Services utility.

Note: You may get an error here when trying to access the properties of the service. If you do get an error, just select the service and look there in the top left of the main service window and click "Stop" to stop the service. If that gives an error or it is already stopped, just skip this step and proceed with the rest.

    Rescan with Hijack This.
Close all browser windows except Hijack This.
Put a check mark beside these entries and click "Fix Checked".

Boot into Safe Mode and navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder.
Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box.
The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

It's normal if some files don't delete!

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options.
On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files".
Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.
Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button.
    Click Apply then OK.

    Empty the Recycle Bin.

Reboot, post a new Hijack This log.

It's exacly the initial scenario at the beginning: "cant run Nortan anti-virus and a warning box pops up periodically that reads: "Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly."""
Last Night I uninstalled N.A.V components that were still there and this morning HijackThis ran fresh. A few minutes ago I reinstalled norton and in the middle I got This message too: "Norton Prersonal Firewall 2006 has encountered a problem during Preinstall Checkup that may prevent you from installing this product. Press view details for more information. Press cancel to discontinur install. Press next to continue." Iclicked next it di what it had to do and finished with the famous message:): Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly.
Then a few secs ago out of the blue this window for norton activation appeared with some other window with thiss error warning:
"! an error has occured in the script in the page
    Line: 26
    Char: 2
Object doesn't support this property or method
    Code: 0
    URL: res://C:\Program Files\Norton\Personal Firewall\DJSAlert.doc/Alert RetailExpired.htm
Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?
    Yes/No"
