Hi,

This is not a breakdown, my Win95 PC is working ok.
It's that i'm stuck trying to get my PC to
do something that i feel should not be hard to do.

I'm trying to find a (small?) program that will
make my PC connect itself up and go on line.

I want it small because i want to put it onto a
floppy disk, it will of course need my details,
in order to connect. User name, Password, and if
its using the dial-up on my win95 then probably
the path to that also.

I can connect up and go on line by pressing the
right buttons and entering my password in the
usual way, but i want the computer to do it.

Any suggestions?

This has been puzzling me for a long time now.

Regards, John

Hi,

I'm running 95.
If i right click on desktop,
then point at 'New'
I can choose 'Microsoft Data Link'

What's that then?
it looks like some sort of dialing
program.

Any ideas?

Hi,

i haven't been able to find out much about 'Data Link'
It seems to be like a mini search engine?
Anyway further to my attempts to get my PC to
put itself on line, I was hoping 'Data Link' might do
something, but i couldn't get it to do anything that
made any sense at all.

So i wondered if i could get the 'Dial Up' part from
the cab files, and see if i could make it dial up.

Well, with the kind assistance of AcaCandy i found
that the cab files can be expanded using Winzip.
Thats all new to me. So ive been trying to find the
bit in the cab files that does the dialing up. No
luck so far. I was hoping it would be called DUN or
something like that.

Maybe someone could tell me what its called?
These shorthand names mean nothing to me.
Or maybe someone knows of a prog that will put a
PC on line?

AcaCandy, my PM keeps on registering as full, i only
have a few in the inbox and sent so i think it might
be the tracking. ive chucked some more out now.

Im going back now to look thru some more cabs.
If anyone can help or suggest anything please do so.
Cheers, John

Did some more shareware searching. I used to use this program myself, a few years ago. It is small enough to fit on a floppy, and I think it has an option to connect when you run it. If not, I know it has an option to connect "if needed" so you can run it, then run something else from the floppy that tries to connect, like an Email checker. That would make Dunce connect automatically.

Hi Larry:),
That looks like just the job.
I think i got a dodgy download,
but i read the 'read me' with it,
and it certainly seems to be just right
for what i want.

I will download it again cos this last one wouldnt load,
but ive had probs before with shareware, if you try to
download again the site thinks you've used up your 20
days and now your after another lot, so it says 'no'

However this is freeware? so i should be ok?

I hope so cos this sounds like its just what i want.

Thanks very much for directing me to this 'DUN Enhancement'
The name's a bit naff, 'Dunce' , i think 'Dune'
would sound better. Still who cares so long as it works.
Im going to try another download now,
Cheers, John

You are unable to unzip it? Or is this happening after the unzip, when you try to run the program?

I can't run it on my machine because I have Windows 2000, but unzipping works fine.

Hi Larry, it seems to unzip fine, into six or seven
files. When i double click on .exe it opens up a
'conditions' box with 'agree' or 'quit' along the
bottom. The agree is greyed out. So it ignores
my clicking, I can however 'quit' successfully.

I was wondering if this might be due to me using
Internet Explorer 3.02 it seems a lot of programs
dont like it very much.

Including TSG.

If you think it is that then its about time i
moved up a notch.

As far as I know, DUNCE doesn't interact with IE at all.

Are there scroll arrows in the window you are looking at? Some of those "agreement" things require that you scroll all the way to the end, so that you appear to have read the whole thing, before you can click on ACCEPT.

Well i think the site had something
about problems with I.E.4.

Yes it has a scroll bar down one side,
i will try that now.

Yes, it wanted the scroll bar at the bottom.
I also wanted my email address.
I had tried it with my address already,
in case that was why it wouldn't fire up,
it wanted both the address, and the scroll
bar at the bottom.

Ok it's installed and i have a little icon in
the clock area.
Now i better see what it can do!

Cheers, John

I wish I had a modem, or at least Windows 9x, so I could try the thing...

If it works from the desktop though, why not the floppy?

Strange .....

I suppose you might be on a train going some where ....

Maybe youre on a very new laptop,
with a radio link to the internet?

i have win 95b,
and a small modem adaptor to the phone line.

What would you like to try?
I'll do it now.

John

ps, just read the above. it sounds sarcastic.
its not meant to. cant see how to avoid that.
