Connecting to Exchange through VPN

I have an issue with Outlook when trying to connecting to exchange over a VPN. After connecting from my remote site to my office Outlook 2010 will not connect to exchange server 2003. It will ping the mail server and it will connect to all severs in my company but outlook will never connect. when trying to create a new account it will give me the following error:


outlook cannot log on. verify you are connected to the network and are using proper server and mailbox name. The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action.

I am sure i am connected to the network and i am sure i am using proper server name.

what can be the issue??
