    How do I connect 4 computers to cable internet

    You get yourself a Ethernet Router then connect the Cable modem and the 4 computers to the Router.

    ahh, what do expect from an overworked, underpaid person :)

    It's quite easy to setup once you have all the stuff needed and if you follow the instructions. And of course, ask and we shall answer.

    Thanks a bunch RSM123 for those sites. I really don't know a lot about the hardware end of the computer so if my questions sound elementary please have patience with me.

    The above sites will give you a reference point for the basics of setting up the network - and of course protecting it from intruders but additionaly you might benefit from more useful help if you use TSG Search for 'Setting up home network' or some other such phrase, as its been discussed numerous times in the past - and replies given by people far more knowledgable than me.
