    Hello,
I am trying to figure this puzzler out. I have a dell laptop that connects to my wireless router, it can do things like get updates through symantec, but when I open my browser Firefox or IE, it will not connect to the internet. I thought maybe it was a router problem, but I have connected another laptop to the same network router, and it works seamlessly. Any thoughts on what could be the problem? It smells like virus/spyware/adware to me, but symantec has found nothing. Have not had time to try adaware, spybot or ewido yet (happened this morning before work).

    Specs:
    Dell Inspirion
    Windows XP
    Firefox 2
    IE 7
    Belkin Router 54g

    Thanks.

Can you post some ping results from this laptop to different addresses?

    Try doing the following:

    ping google.com

    ping 64.233.167.99

Try those and see what you get. Might also try just to do an nslookup on google.com and see what you get for results. Would look like this:

    nslookup google.com

If you get errors or some such, it might be the DNS servers the laptop is pulling.

Sounds more like spyware than a virus. That would also explain why the anti-virus software didn't pick it up. Might try those spyware removal programs you mentioned, get the updates, reboot in safe mode and do a scan. Seen that often in the past and they took care of the problem.

Bob, does "it can do things like get updates through symantec" rule out corrupted WinSock?

Typically that is the case. But it is worth a try.

I've tried all the spy ware programs i mentioned in my first post, ran them all in safe mode, and deleted or quarantined the threats. The browser still does not connect as mentioned above. I have included this time the hijackthis log. Thank you for your help.

What were the results of the ping tests requested earlier?

I'm not qualified to comment on potential malware issues, but know that firewalls, including Zone Alarm, can block all kinds of access if they are not properly configured. If you can't determine for sure that ZA is not blocking your browsers temporarily uninstall it.

I just installed ZA about 25 mins ago. I wanted it to lock out the internet until the problem is fixed. The problem was present before ZA was installed. Thanks!

Sorry about that Bob, I must have overlooked your post. The pings worked fine. 0% loss. I'm puzzled. It must be some sort of malware or something. Also, upon uninstalling things in which I do not think need to be on a computer (the computer is a friend of mines, im using mine now), I tried uninstalling all sorts of Yahoo stuff, and one thing that would not uninstall was "yahoo! extras". This caught my attention first because extras was in lowercase, exactly how i have provided. To further reassure my curiosity, when I clicked remove, it made the computer restart as if I clicked the restart command. Weird. Thats all I've been able to come across so far. Thanks everyone.

Actually it wasn't my post. It was the very first reply to the original post. To confirm, all ping tests worked, you can ping external sites by both IP and Name?

If so, you might uninstall anything extra internet related you don't need. For example, although rare, I have seen problems simply from google.

Might also run MSCONFIG / Startup and remove things you said you don't want starting like:
    "C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\ypager.exe" -quiet

As long as it seems to be installed, have you also tried the Microsoft's Defender.

Ive disabled things I BELIEVE i don't need. I've uninstalled everything I was wary of or had no idea what it was. I could ping by name and IP. I have tried the following: Adaware, spybot, defender, ewido. They find things, mostly cookies, and delete or quarantine them. I ran them all in safe mode.

Since you have service pack 2,
    Start / Run / Cmd
    Then run
    netsh winsock reset

This will reset your winsock2 registry entries. Then reboot the computer.

But again, I would recommend making sure they aren't part of the problem by removing google toolbar and the yahoo you said you didn't want from starting. They are certainly showing in the hijack this information posted.
