    Hi all.

I am considering purchasing a phone with Wifi capabilities. I have a wireless internet connection at home which is routed by a Motorola SGB900 Wireless Surfboard gateway.

I already have 2 wireless computers (1 laptop and 1 PC) connected wirelessly. If I purchase a Wifi phone, will I be able to connect to the internet via this wireless connection?

My work also offers free wireless to all employees and I am able to connect my laptop there. Will a Wifi phone be able to connect to my work network?

Also, will the Wifi connection cost me anything from my phone provider as using WAP does?

    Thanks all

    Yes you will.

    Yes you will.

    No it wont.

There are two things to consider here though. 1 what kind of security does your home and work wireless connections use? I know that some phones are not compatible with WPA, in which case you wouldnt be able to connect with disabling the security. It would be worth checking this first.

Also some phones may not have built in support for DHCP, and you may have to configure your own ip address once you connect.

How about the fact that some websites with too much detail dont work on WAP phones. Will all websites work on wifi phones?

WAP is pretty much considered dead by most developers :) If your phone supports wifi then its going to support a compatible html browser. 99% of sites will work fine.

One thing to note: Generally, if you enable the Wi-Fi, it disables the phone.

I have a Verizon Pocket PC. If I turn the Wi-Fi on, it turns the phone part off, and I cannot make or receive calls. As soon as I turn the Wi-Fi off, it enables the phone connection.

I must not be up on phone jargon, I didn't know that one. :) I thought of a Wireless Access Point and couldn't get beyond that. :D

I am looking at a phone with WLAN specifications listed as: Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g

Will this be able to connect to my Motorola SGB900 Wireless SURFboard Gateway and the network at work?
