Connecting XP machine to network.

    My network functions with three other computers: XP, Vista, and MAC, so router functions.
    Subnet masks properly configured
    An XP desktop is problematic.
    Changed network adapter cards, now using a Ralink USB.
    Passwords configured, along with AES security types, both in the Ralink utility, and Windows zero config.
    Adapter pings successfully (four times)
    Have run <cmd; netsh int ip reset log.txt, reset winsock, ipconfig release/renew> &etc.
    Have released though not uninstalled both firewalls; McAffee and Windows
    In taskbar, Ralink shows as disconnected; but in Device manager it is ok.
    The Ralink utility shows connection, then disconnection, in rapid succession.
    I have followed John Will’s checklist, so everything is properly “abled”
    Color me stumped.

    Have you removed all the stored wireless network profiles and then attempted to connect again? When you do this, does it prompt you for the encryption key?

    Are you SURE your adapter and the current version of the drivers supports the level of encryption you're using? Have you tried connecting with no encryption to see if that works?

    Thanks for your reply.

    The connection is up; I reconfigured the profile within the Ralink utility as I tried to be certain that encryption was supported- and something worked.

    I hate being a victim of "cargo cult" mentality- but the big silver bird delivered, though I could never describe, or recreate, what I did.

    This effort started Veterans Day- what am I going to do with all my spare time?

    it is up, but still unstable; I think I must6 have ignorantly changed something in cmd services; do you know of a default list for that list?

    Check that all your network services are Started:
    • COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
    • Computer Browser
    • DHCP Client
    • DNS Client
    • Network Connections
    • Network Location Awareness
    • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
    • Server
    • TCP/IP Netbios helper
    • Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations only)
    • WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations only)
    • Workstation

    Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

    All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

    If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing.
