I have this desktop Windows XP that is not connecting to my wireless network although it is picking up that it is there and on the list. But when I try to connect it to the network it says "windows can't connect to any of your preffered networks". I have another Windows XP laptop that is connecting to the same network just fine. Also, for some strange reason on the desktop everytime i set the time on the bottom and I turn off computer the time always resets to 12:00am Jan 1, 2003. Why is this happening? And how can i get my desktop to connect to my network?

sounds like the bios battery is flat and needs changing

whats the make and exact model of the desktop
remove the wireless profiles and try and connect again
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

How to remove Wireless Profiles - for XP
    http://mgmcc.forumotion.net/networking-tutorials-f17/removing-an-existing-wireless-profile-t109.htm
    - XP
    http://mgmcc.forumotion.net/t109-removing-an-existing-wireless-profile
    - delete the preferred networks
start> control panel> network connections> right click on the wireless connection> listed wireless networks tab in the preferred network list click on each one and - remove button

you will then have to enter the wireless security key for any networks you connect to - so make sure you know the correct password , and not using an incorrect password at all

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Remove the wireless security
    Is your wireless security enabled?
if so - log into the router and remove the wireless security - now see if it will connect.
if it does - log back into the router and try with the wireless security enabled again

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ah ok I see, well I tryed to remove the preffered networks and put them back in, that didn't help. So next thing i will try is the security thing you said to do. But can I get some more info on how to do it? Cause i don't know where I log into my router to or from.

    reference manual here
    http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/WGR614V9/WGR614v9_UM_14May08.pdf
Connect to the wireless router by typing http://www.routerlogin.net or the router’s LAN IP
address (the default is 192.168.1.1) in the address field of your browser, and then press Enter.
    A login window opens:
Enter admin for the router user name and your password (or the default, password).

    see page 1-3

    emulator here
    http://www.voiproblem.com/emulators/Netgear/WGR614v6/start.html

you can goto the wireless settings and disable the security options

    what didnt work
does the real router configuration pages look the same as the link I sent for the emulator
nothing else to trry - that's how you setup the password

lets see some screen shots of the real router after you have logged into it

To post a screen shot of the active window.

    Windows XP
Hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application (Start> All Programs> Accessories> Paint) and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.

    Vista or Windows 7
you can use the "snipping tool" which is found in Start> All programs> Accessories> Snipping Tool
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-use-the-windows-snipping-tool/

    Windows 8
you can use the snipping tool > Open Snipping Tool (From the Windows 8 Start Screen, type "snip" and press enter.
    >Press the Esc. key.
    >go back to your Windows 8 start screen - Swipe from left or press Window Button
    >Press Ctrl+PrntScr button to use Snipping Tool

To upload the screen shot to the forum, open the full reply window ("Go Advanced" button) and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.
