to connect two computers directly to each other , with the least ammount of equipment you will need .
    1. two ethernet cards with sometype of protocol bound to each "ie TCP/IP, IPX, NETBUEI"
    2. a cross over cable

a cross over cable has a different pin assignment than a conventional straight cable. sometimes they are marked "cross"

for the protocol part, configure your network cards with
    one machine with

    IP 10.0.0.10
    subnetmask 255.255.255.0

    one machine with

    IP 10.0.0.11
    subnetmask 255.255.255.0

This is the most basic configuration you will only beable to see each other.
