When going into Internet Explorer, My Computer, My Documents or any other program that uses an address bar the following Error Message comes up:

"EXPLORER An error has occurred in your program. To keep working anyway, click Ignore and save your work in a new file. To quit this program, click Close. You will lose information you entered since your last Save."

When I click Ignore nothing happens. When I click Close, a window with a white cross enclosed in a red circle appears with the words "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor."

The icons on the desktop won't let me access these programs and so I'm currently having to get into Windows Explorer via the Start menu. How do I fix this? Your help would be very much appreciated. Thanks:confused:

Not sure if this is an Internet Explorer problem but you could repair Internet Explorer anyway and see if it helps.
    To do this,
Select Start > Run, type msinfo32.exe in the Open box, and then click OK
After the Msinfo32.exe tool opens, select Internet Explorer Repair Tool from the Tools menu.

Sorry, what is a hijack? I am not very computer literate.

Hijack This is a program that will examine your computer for spyware and other nasties.

You can download it here http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt

If you run Hijack This, don't fix anything until you have posted your log and someone who knows more about the logs than me will let you know what to fix.

    Thanks EvileYe for the website.
Problematic. I was able to cut and paste to get to the site however when I tried to download.....the old error problem happened again. The problem seems to be that a new window wants to open to download the hijack thingy (technical term) and the problem my computer has stands in its way.

    Thanks anyway.:(

Thanks for the email EvileYe. Got to the site and did the scan - great.

Only problem now is that my system won't let me save the scan in order to post it. Not giving up yet.

Any more clues on this one?

Just as a hunch, try this:
Change your display driver settings to slow down the hardware acceleration for that driver. This can usually be done without causing any loss of performance for that driver. To do this, go to Windows display properties, Settings, Advanced, Performance. Then set hardware acceleration to the second notch from the left.
Update your display driver to a newer version.

Thanks skyman. I did what you said and now we can access what we couldn't access before. Just one question, what do you mean by "Update your display driver to a newer version." Do we have to buy this? Or download it from the Internet? Do we even have to do this if we can now access all the programs?
    Thanks again.

You should be able to download an updated driver from the net.
To find out the display adapter you are currently using. Right click on a blank area on your desktop and select properties, when the display properties box opens, select the tab to the far right called settings then click advanced down at the bottom then the adapter tab. In here it will tell you what display adapter you are using, Click Properties then Driver to tell you the current driver details.
You should be able to find an updated driver on the web.

Can you post your HJT log now ?

Thanks for your ongoing support, EvileYe. I've identified the driver I have and will look for an update soon. I tried to save the Hijackthis log file, but it came up with this error:

    Dr. Watson
An error occurred while loading the file C:\My Documents\hijackthis.log. The file is damaged or is not a valid Dr. Watson log file.

    Lynne.

You may want to try turning Dr Watson off.

If Dr Watson is enabled on your machine, you should see a little icon down in your system tray (the little collection of tiny pictures down by the clock to the lower right of your screen) Right-click on the Dr Watson icon and then Left-click on Exit Dr.Watson. That will get rid of Dr. Watson until the next time you re-start your machine.
Then You should be able to save your HJT Log.
After you save your log a notepad window should open up with your log in it. When it does this Just hit CTRL A (to select all) then CTRL C (to copy) and finally paste it in here by hitting CTRL V.

See how ya go with that.
