Go to start, run, type msconfig enter, at top go to selective startup, uncheck programs you dont want to auto start, click apply, reboot, Done.

    Hi phorbin,
Try Start>Run>type "appwiz.cpl" without the quotes on the command line and hit OK.
    That should open Add/Remove programs.
    T.

I to have this same problem and am running Windows XP on a E machine. So just being able to open up add/remove isn't the solution to the problem, it's a way around it.
When I go to control panel off the start button, right after all the items show up in the side menu I getan error has to end. Then it ends all programs on screen......
Did you ever figure anything out, phorbin??
