I wanted to add Logoff, Shutdown & Restart to XP context menu for a friend. Followed directions from
    http://www.intowindows.com/add-turn-off-restart-log-off-options-to-my-computer-context-menu/

I didn't realize I would need to rightclick MyComputer for the options.
I overdosed on stupid pills & now I need your help again! I not only deleted the keep I just created, I deleted the one showing MyComputer icon because now the icon is labeled Folder and appears as an old windows icon.
I put the following text in notepad & saved as computer. REG
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
;Add log off option to My Computer(Computer) context menu
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\ Log Off \command]
    @="shutdown -l -f -t 2″
;Add log off option to My Computer(Computer) context menu
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\ Restart \command]
    @="shutdown -r -f -t 3″
;Add log off option to My Computer(Computer) context menu
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\ Turn Off computer \command]
    @="shutdown -s -f -t 3″

    Part 2
Would saving this as explorer.REG add Logon, Shutdown & Restart options to context menu as I intended to do?
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
;Add log off option to explorer.exe context menu
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\ Log Off \command]
    @="shutdown -l -f -t 2″
;Add log off option to explorer.exe context menu
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\ Restart \command]
    @="shutdown -r -f -t 3″
;Add log off option to explorer.exe context menu
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\ Turn Off computer \command]
    @="shutdown -s -f -t 3″

Before trying it again, make sure you set a new System Restore Point.
Also, navigate to the CLSID key you are modifying, right click it and Export the key to your desktop so you can restore it to it's current state.

You asked if that reg file will work.
It "looks" right, but I haven't tried it.
They will add the context menu entries, but I'm not sure on the syntax of the commands, especially the "time" switch in the command.

OK. Tried it and it had a couple problems.
I made a couple changes and it works well now.
You might want to change the time to 0 or 1 if you don't like the info window.

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\LogOff]
    @="Log Off"
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\LogOff\command]
    @="shutdown -l -f -t 2"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\Restart]
    @="Restart"
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\Restart\command]
    @="shutdown -r -f -t 3"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\TurnOff]
    @="Turn Off Computer"
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\TurnOff\command]
    @="shutdown -s -f -t 3"

Thank you for help throoper. It works when I right-click on My Computer but, we keep the taskbar and icons hidden so, we need to have those options available when we right-click the plain desktop.

AFAIK you can't add items to the XP desktop context menu with a reg hack.

    Had a thought.
If you are auto-hiding the taskbar, how about shortcuts on the Quick Launch for the shutdown?
