Hi
I'm running XP SP3, genuine product all paid for, also run Avast (anti virus) and Malwarebytes (anti malware) both of which I use every time I download anything
A few days ago Windows did an automatic update and about the same time I installed an uninstall program called "Your Uninstall"
This may or may not be a coincidence but at about the same time I started having boot up problems, it would freeze as soon as the "welcome" message came on the screen. Switching off and rebooting is usually successful although sometimes it takes 2 attempts.
I thought the problem might be in too many programs on start up so I checked in "Your Uninstall" to see what was there. This was when I noticed that a program called "Windows Genuine Advantage Tool KB892130" was marked as "corrupted"
I'd never heard of this program before but have since learnt that it is automatically installed with XP and is there to check the validity of the XP. Obviously it must have been there for years and has been ok otherwise presumably I would not have been able to install the SP updates.
My questions are:
1. Do I need to worry about the corrupt Advantage tool and if so what can I do to repair it?
2. Could this corruption be causing the boot up problems or are there other things I should do to solve this?
Incidentally the Windows "Restore" tool hasn't worked for ages, don't know why so can't reset to an earlier time
My technical knowledge is pretty thin but I can usually follow instructions
Many thanks in advance for any suggestions
