Computer Dell Dimension 2350 Operating System Windows XP preloaded

Have attempted repair install using Windows XP CD
Repair Installation went as far as it could and came back with the following message "
Line 0 of hivesft.inf file is corrupted. Setup cannot continue"
Is it possible to edit the Line 0 of hivesft.inf file in the Registry?
Where can I find out what Line 0 should read?

I have information and data on the computer which I do not want to lose and so doing a clean install is not one of the solutions I would like to have to do because of loss of info data etc.

I cannot get at the Windows Restore Programme because I cannot get the Computer to boot into Windows. Is it possible to get at the Windows Restore Programm throughthe C Drive? at least I could try and wind the clock back and see if the Computer will then boot up correctly.

    Any advice/suggestions gratefully received Thanks
