about a year ago, i installed an asus A7V333 motherbaord as
    part of an upgrade.

and up until recently i've only used 2 of the usb ports, but now that i need to use 2 more, it seems that only the ones i was using actually work!!

would this be a fault with the board or something to do with the set up?

If it is like many other older ASUS boards, the other 2 USB ports should be on a back-plane connector (were your slots are).

There is a good chance that they are not connected to the motherboard, or not connected correctly. It happens, double check the wiring with the manual. With built-in USB, usually they all work or they all don't.
