Just had a thought = can a virus or malware get into the bios and cause the following problem ?

PC chips M848a V2.1 motherboard problems
I have had this board in my desktop PC for some 8 years and generally it's been no problem. THEN - last week it suddenly started this problem. Runs up in the usual way until it gets to the "loading windows" screen. The machine then restarts again and goes through this cycle repeatedly. Running windows XP. Have removed all un necessary hardware, changed the c drive into another machine and virus etc checked it to no avail and no problems. Even tried booting from the a drive with a dos 6.22 boot disc but the board does not like it. It can see the a drive but it can't read or write to / from it. I am beginning to think the disc controller section has problems. I have tried all units and leads that can be swapped in another older machine and they all work OK. Even tried the old smaller original hard drive back in the machine but no luck. Any ideas before I consider either reflashing the bios as a last resort or just chucking the thing away.
