I am having problems with my computer at times running at 100% CPU. Most of the time it is explorer.exe running at 99%...last night though Task Manager showed no task at high CPU yet the CPU was running at 100%. Sometimes stopping and starting explorer.exe will correct the issue sometimes it does not. When this happens the computer is basically useless. Sometimes rebooting the computer will help, but mainly temporary because it will happen again. I have not been able to figure out what triggers the CPU to go to 100%.

This might be caused by a spyware because I keep getting a Winfixer 2006 popup...and some others at times (i.e. Party Poker). I have downloaded the Vundo fix from Norton and ran it. It says it cleaned it, but it seems to be coming back or never really removed it.

I have a Dell computer and I am running Windows XP Home edition which is up to date. I have Norton installed (up to date) and have it set to run virus checking weekly...also ran it in Safe Mode. I also have SpyBot, Microsoft AntiSpyware and SpySweeper which I have run all of these in Safe Mode. None of these are detecting anything except MicroSoft AntiSpyware that keep saying I have YourSiteBar, but never seems to remove it even when I tell it to.

I downloaded HiJackThis and have attached the log after running all these. Any help would be appreciated...I can provide more information if needed.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.
    it should look like this
    VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By pressing enter you agree that you are using this at your own risk
  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:
Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    Then Press Enter
  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyy.dll
  • Press Enter,
  • Next you will see:
Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    Then Press Enter,
  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\yybeg.*
If you have a script blocker running, you may get a warning about a malicious script. Allow the script to run. It is not malicious.

  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HijackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

    • O2 - BHO: ATLDistrib Object - {93C6313C-9DB4-4694-8BD0-E378C573A9AD} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyy.dll

      O2 - BHO: (no name) - {EA32FB3B-21C9-42cc-B8EF-01A9B28EDB0D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnnm.dll

      O20 - Winlogon Notify: gebyy - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyy.dll

      O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmnnm - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pmnnm.dll
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

ActiveScan

I am attaching the file "Activescan.txt" because pasting the log in here takes over the 30,000 limit.

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ (W2K/XP Only)
· Install ewido.
· During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
· Launch ewido
· It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
· On the left side of the main screen click update
· Click on Start and let it update.
· DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:
(Start tapping F8 at the first black screen after power up)

Run Ewido:
· Click on scanner
· Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
· During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
· When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
· Save the report to your C: Drive
This will take some time to run!
Boot to normal mode

=============
Fix these with HJT – mark them, close IE, click fix checked

Thanks. I'll try these tonight. After doing the original tasks you suggested, I don't seem to have the Winfixer popup anymore. I thought the 100% CPU usage had gone away, but it happened again this morning...I never really know what causes it, but this time I was trying to pull up www.google.com from another website. Looking at the Task Manager, Explorer.exe was at 99%. I killed it and restarted and it went back up to 99%. I unplugged my Cable Modem from my computer and killed and restarted Explorer.exe again it that seemed to work. Not sure if any of this helps or if it work just worked by coincidence or not.

I'll try the new tasks you laid out...Ewido, HJT, Killbox and cleaning of temp files and post the HJT and Ewido log files.

Thanks again.

I completed running Ewido, Killbox and HJT. I am including the log files from Ewido and HJT (after everything was complete). The 2 files you had said to delete during the killbox.exe were not found. Also, the following were not found to fix during the running of HJT after Ewido was run successfully. Thanks again for your help.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Vundo normally gets installed via a security hole in Sun Java so do this please

go to www.java.com & download the latest version of java 1.5.0.6

install it & then go to add/remove programs and UNINSTALL ALL previous versions of sun java

    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhg.dll
  • Press Enter,
  • Next you will see:
Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    Then Press Enter,
  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\ghkmp.*
If you have a script blocker running, you may get a warning about a malicious script. Allow the script to run. It is not malicious.

  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HijackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

    • O2 - BHO: ATLDistrib Object - {2353FCBC-012D-487B-8BF3-865C0929FBEB} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhg.dll

      O20 - Winlogon Notify: avldr - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\avldr.dll

      O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmkhg - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhg.dll
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Sorry, I didn't get back sooner. I performed the last task you requested. So far everything seems to be okay. Is there anything else you think I need to do?
