The 512KB one is a Northwood P4, the 1MB one is a Prescott P4. The Northwood is the faster of the two, as it has a shorter internal pipeline. The Prescott has a larger cache to help make up for its longer, slower pipeline; but it's not quite as fast as the Northwood.

The longer the pipeline, the longer it takes for a CPU to execute an instruction, but CPUs with longer pipelines can be clocked at higher speeds. Intel introduced the Prescott to replace the Northwood, as they couldn't get the Northwood to run any faster.
