I have a i7 860 desktop (8 gb ram) which tends to freeze :( on one of the data applications that I run. Using the 'performance monitor' I discovered that the freeze occurs when the 'frequency' goes above 100%. At no point does the cpu utilization exceed 15%.

Several calls to the vendor have failed to resolve the issue or even educate me.

The question I have is what is this 'frequency' and two, why does it cause the application to freeze while the 8 cores are relaxing ?

Any insight is most appreciated and thanks.

Thanks for the response. I think I get the idea, but I still don't see why frequency should shoot up when the cores are running at only 15% max. Feels like something is not right, processor under-utilized yet system unresponsive.
