Few questions about dual core CPU guys 'n' gals.....

Intel Pentium D 820 Dual Core 2.8Ghz......is this fast with a dual core? Does it give any heat problems etc?

I'm looking to get a PC with this as the CPU, and want to know if I'de be better getting a single core of a different speed etc.

That is the older core and yes they do tend to run warm. If you want to go dual core, I would go with either the new core2 duo or if you want a bargain then the Pentium D with the pressler core ie the 9xx series. These run cooler than the older 8xx series. This is due to having EIST tech. I run a 940 and right now it is at 32C; not bad at all.
