    Is there any way to make this column transparent on the page by about 70%?

    .leftcolumn{
    width: 80%;
    float: left;
    background-color: #CC0000;
    text-align: left;
    border-right: #FFFFFF;
    border-left: #FFFFFF;
    padding-top: 4px;
    {

    Just i'm a bit stuck and was hoping someone could advise.

    Kind Regards
    Tim

    filter:alpha(opacity=70);
    -moz-opacity:.7;
    -khtml-opacity:.7;
    opacity:.7;

    You need all four for it to work cross browser.

    Just a quick correction, you want } at the end, not {

    .leftcolumn{
    width: 80%;
    float: left;
    background-color: #CC0000;
    text-align: left;
    border-right: #FFFFFF;
    border-left: #FFFFFF;
    padding-top: 4px;
    }

    better ;)

    I don't think this is required for modern/current versions of Gecko-based browsers (Mozilla, K-Meleon, etc).

    Peace...

    You are right as of Mozilla 1.7 it's just opacity. Although including -moz-opacity doesn't hurt and there may be a few users who haven't upgraded.
