I use ctrl/alt plus a designated key to bring up certain often used programs, (examples, ctrl/alt/p to bring up MS Publisher, ctrl/alt/x for windows explorer). It is a very handy shortcut method and I learnt it on TSG. Problem is I can't remember how to set up these shortcuts and can't find the original thread using Search. Can anyone remind me?

Try going to the Tips and Tricks forum and doing a search.
That would be my best guess as to where you found it in the first place.
