I'm trying to help a friend. His computer has gradually become very slow, mostly when opening websites with a lot of content. Yesterday Firefox couldn't save any downloaded file on the hard disk ('not allowed to update this folder'), but Internet Explorer could. Ny errors reported in the system log.

Today when I start the computer it reaches the Windows XP login, but crashes 5 seconds later. Starts up again, crashes, .... No messages. If I quickly log in, the Windows screen appears OK, and I can start a program by clicking an icon. This seems to prolong a little the five seconds before the crash.

Last successful boot gives the same result. Safe mode only presents a black screen with a blinking cursor.

I have run a memtest which reports no errors.

The computer isn't any standard model, built by a computer shop. Windows XP Home edition SP3. Motherboard M2A-VM HDMI and 1 GB memory. Everything has worked fine for 4-5 years. No configuration changes or added equipment of any kind. No new programs. No overclocking or high temps. Not very frequently used.

    Any suggestions?
