D-Link DIR 815 can't connect to internet

My old Thomson router was (and still is) working fine. Just bought a new D-Link 815 N Quadband Dir 815 router and I can't get it to work.

I can connect to the router but the issue is connecting to the internet. I'm thinking it may be faulty as when you plug it into the phone line the light that says it is connected to the internet doesn't come on and it is also affecting the phone line as when I pick up the phone I get no dial tone when the router is connected. The phone cable is fine as it works with my old router.

Any suggestions or does it sound like the router is faulty?

assume you are using a filter still??
the light will not come on if its not connecting to internet, it is fairly common for new routers to need resetting usually a tiny tiny hole somewhere to pop a pin into fro 30 secs i would re try before sending it back

Thanks for your reply.

Still using filter and already tried the reset button but that doesn't fix the problem. Looks like it may have to go back.
