data recovery

    how do I recover data from a reformated linux server

    Depends on how it was reformatted and how it was organized prior to being reformatted. Could very easily be nonrecoverable.

    Try testdisk. If that doesn't find it you're probably screwed.

    If you can plug the drive into another system as a slave drive. Mount the drive and do an ls and see if there are any files or directories on the drive. Hopefully the usr folder was on a separate partition from the OS just like swap and bin should be setup the same way.
